In recent weeks, customers at the Machsanei Hashuk supermarket in Jerusalem’s Katamon neighborhood noticed something new: alongside Israeli staff, four migrant workers had joined. “I was shocked,” recalls Smadar, a regular. “I was trying to figure out whether some product was on sale, so I asked one of the workers – and suddenly saw he was Thai and couldn’t speak Hebrew.”
