  • June 19, 2018

In response to “In first, Israeli troops fires during Gazans scheming to send agitator balloons into Israel” (June 9)

The use of kites and balloons as vehicles for arson isn’t a Hamas invention. During World War II, a Japanese launched some 9,000 agitator balloons from their domain in a wish that they would be carried to a United States by a jet tide – a stretch of several thousand kilometers. The balloons were done of silk lonesome with rubber or paper, filled with hydrogen to a volume of about 500 cubic meters, and versed with obsolete control systems to say altitude.

At slightest 342 balloons reached American territory. One strike a high-voltage line and set glow to a chief weapons prolongation site in Hanford, Washington. The usually municipal casualties in a continental United States during World War II  were 5 students and a clergyman strike by a balloon explosve nearby Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Even yet this is an aged and obvious tactic – and notwithstanding a Startup Nation’s defense-oriented investigate and growth institutions, a secrecy planes and anti-missile missiles – Israel has been held confused by this tactic, as evidenced by a blackened belligerent nearby a Gaza border.
