In the IDF, not all women are equal

A court petition filed this week against the Education Ministry, the Defense Ministry and the Social Equality Ministry  demands that girls in religious schools be given the same preparation as religious boys for military service, akin to the prepoaration offered girls in non-religious schools.

Amnon Lorch, the attorney behind the petition, is demanding equal budgets for preparatory programs, regardless of gender.

Despite a Supreme Court ruling from January, the Education Ministry has not provided equal budgets to religious schools for the purpose of preparing female students for military service.

Only a fraction of the budget given to non-religious schools is provided for the benefit of religious girls in violation of the ruling.

Minister of Education Rafi Peretz said Monday that he will be holding meetings with his staff to discuss the matter in the coming days.

Peretz who previously served as the chief rabbi of the IDF, said religious women in the military deserve the best possible support.

However, when challenged on whether he supports religious girls serving in the first place, the minister was far less clear.

He has also refrained from addressing girls preparing
for the service in the past
