Ultra-Orthodox dropouts flock to violent Jerusalem protests, pointing to a worrying trend

  • December 01, 2021

Jerusalem has known interethnic violence before, but in the past it’s traditionally been between East Jerusalem Palestinians and religious-nationalist extremists. But the disturbances of the last few nights have seen a new breed of rioter – young Haredi men.

The ultra-Orthodox have been victims of violent attacks by young Arabs, but the Haredi reaction is on a scale never before seen. The Haredim joining in the violence aren’t affiliated with yeshivas but are part of a growing group of Haredi dropouts. It’s a problem with wide-ranging implications for Israeli society.
