Israel praises protest in New York against Iranian president during UN General Assembly
Israel criticized Iran’s president on Wednesday following the new leader’s fiery speech at the United Nations General Assembly.
In a tweet, the Israeli Foreign Ministry praised trucks in New York City displaying messages critical of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.
“Inside the UN building, Iran’s president continues to lie to the world outside on the streets of NYC, we all know the truth: #RaisiTerrorist,” said the ministry.
Several trucks are driving around New York City this week to protest Raisi and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Some feature pictures of Raisi painting him as a human rights abuser, according to images from the opposition Iranian Americans for Liberty group. The trucks are in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, where Iranian and scores of other international officials are in attendance.
Raisi has long faced criticism for his human rights record, including his role in the mass killing of Iranian protesters in 1988.
It is not surprising Israel celebrated the anti-Raisi protest in New York. Raisi slammed Israel during his speech Tuesday, not to mention the wider conflict between Israel and Iran.
“The occupier Zionist regime is the organizer of the biggest state terrorism, whose agenda is to slaughter women and children in Gaza and the West Bank,” said Raisi in his address, which was delivered via video message from Tehran.
Raisi also criticized US sanctions on Iran, and mentioned the Jan. 6 storming of the US Capitol and the August withdrawal of US forces from Iran’s neighbor Afghanistan.
“From the Capitol to Kabul, one clear message was sent to the world: the United States hegemonic system has no credibility,” said Raisi.
There have been numerous notable comments from Middle Eastern leaders at the General Assembly so far, including on Afghanistan. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said “We no longer have the tolerance to absorb new immigration waves” in reference to people fleeing Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Turkey already hosts more than two million Syrian refugees, and is weary of accepting Afghans. Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani urged the international community to not boycott the Taliban in his speech Tuesday. Qatar has relations with both the Taliban and the United States.
The list of Middle Eastern leaders set to address the assembly on Wednesday includes King Salman of Saudi Arabia, Iraqi President Barham Salih and Lebanese President Michael Aoun, among others.
