Man shot dead near northern Arab town in 3rd suspected murder over past day

  • December 22, 2022

A man was fatally shot Thursday near an Arab town in northern Israel, the third suspected murder in less than 24 hours.

According to the Magen David Adom ambulance service, a 20-year-old was seriously injured in the shooting on Route 65 outside Kafr Qara. He was later pronounced dead by medics who found him in his car unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooting victim was not immediately named.

Video from the scene showed a masked suspect firing a pistol at the car while another held what appeared to be a rifle.

A separate video showed a car riddled with bullet holes and with shattered windows.

Police issued a statement saying an investigation had been opened.

The shooting came hours after a 23-year-old man was shot dead in Haifa, with police appearing to believe the killing was linked to the recent murder of a father and his 2-year-old son.

On Wednesday evening, a 19-year-old was killed in a shooting in the central town of Jaffa. Police arrested a suspect in that shooting, suspected to be the result of a deal over an airsoft gun that went bad. The suspect, who has claimed self-defense, was released to house arrest on Thursday.

Following the deadly shooting Thursday in Haifa, the Abraham Initiatives watchdog reported that 113 members of the Arab community have been killed in homicides since the start of 2022, including 96 who were shot.
