British tourist who went to Afghanistan safe in Dubai

  • August 19, 2021

A British tourist who traveled to Afghanistan during the Taliban takeover is reportedly safe in the United Arab Emirates.

Miles Routledge landed in Dubai on Tuesday after being evacuated from Kabul the day prior. He joined dozens of civilians aboard a Royal Air Force cargo plane, the British tabloid The Sun reported.

The 20-something student documented his journey, which began on Friday, on his social media accounts under the name Lord Miles Le-vesconte Routledge. His profiles on Facebook and Twitch no longer had any Afghanistan content on Wednesday.

The dangerous trip was heavily covered by the British press. A friend of Routledge told The Sun that the journey was “a joke that’s just gone way out of hand.” Routledge posted a lot of content from the trip, including pictures of himself next to machine guns and in military gear. At one point, he claimed to have been abandoned by the British Embassy and said he was “prepared for death,” according to The Daily Mail.

The Emirati news outlet The National also covered his journey and evacuation.

Routledge’s visit coincided with the Taliban seizing control of the capital Kabul amid the ongoing US military withdrawal from the country.

Several Middle Eastern airlines suspended flight services to Afghanistan after Routledge landed in Kabul.

It is unclear where Routledge will go from Dubai. British citizens can fly from the UAE to the United Kingdom.
